Whether you're dealing with flat feet or you're having another foot issue, Dr. Proner and the rest of our podiatry care team are here to help you feel your best. Here, we'll take a look at the causes of flat feet, the symptoms of the condition, and your treatment options.

Causes of Flat Feet

Some people are born with flat feet, while others develop the condition over time. There are many factors that can contribute to flat feet, including injury, arthritis, hypertension, obesity, pregnancy, and diabetes. Your podiatrist may talk with you about things you can do to reduce the severity of the discomfort you're experiencing due to flat feet.

Symptoms of Flat Feet

Symptoms of flat feet include pain along the heel and arch area that may get worse when you increase your level of physical activity. You may also experience pain along the inside of the ankle, as well as leg cramps, aches, or fatigue in the muscles of the leg and the foot. Some people, however, experience no symptoms.

Flat Feet Diagnosis and Treatment

When you come into our office for an appointment, Dr. Proner will examine your feet to learn more about your natural arch pattern. He'll also test the strength of your ankles to learn more about how the arch in your foot (or lack thereof) has affected your ankles. In addition to making these visual observations, Dr. Proner may also recommend X-rays or a CT scan to learn more about the inner workings of your foot.

If your flat feet do not bother you, there's no need to get treatment. But if you are having pain or discomfort due to your flat feet, Dr. Proner may recommend, stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory medication, or arch supports to give your foot the support that it needs to function properly. In rare cases, surgery is recommended if your feet limit your activity and have not responded to non-invasive treatment.
